Surely they work well, but not state-of-the-art. Also, the Navy is still using inches. NASA lost a mission due to a metric/English unit confusion.

Does profit justify this?

Those fields allow the inventions that propel new industries, but unlike foreign students, we aren't interested. Changing the culture so that hard work is applauded will not be easy.
