David Gray Let me put it bluntly Daniel. There is no such thing as a 'creation scientist'. The two words are mutually exclusive of each other. You can choose to ignore modern geology and physics all you want. The difference between them and your so called 'science' is that they develop theories to explain observed phenomena whereas you attempt to explain observed phenomena to explain your own beliefs.
David Gray Broun is an embarrassment to Georgia. I do not believe he would stand a chance at taking over the Chambliss seat in the Senate, so I am not exactly worried. Congressmen like Broun siting on the Science, Space, and Technology committee are a perfect example of how Republicans just don't understand the importance of scientific investments. Really it is a travesty that he is allowed to sit on such a committee. It appears that the Georgia GOP is trying to court an unknown in the business community instead of tapping a known politician (or an unknown politician for that matter). I am not exactly sure what the strategy is behind this. Broun will not garner statewide support should he choose to run. Instead he will be seen as the buffoon that he is.
David Gray Daniel, he has no theories. He dismisses science because certain theories somehow disagree with his perception of what his religion teaches him. Broun is an embarrassment.
David Gray Chris, I agree that the NICS system is broken because currently there is not enough incentive for states to input records. We need to change the law to make the incentive much greater and thus making those inputs almost mandatory. Use the same methods used to raise the age of alcohol to 21. Make the incentive so great that states will not ignore the requirement.
David Gray You can understand though why the catholic hospital is being looked at as hypocritical while fighting the claim. If they practiced what they preached, they wouldn't be fighting it in court.
David Gray Oddly enough John, a catholic hospital in Colorado has argued that they are not liable for the deaths of a couple of 7 month old fetuses because they are not people and thus have no rights as a person. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/01/24/fetuses-not-people-catholic-hospital-says-in-court-case/1863013/ Funny how when it comes to a court fight involving monetary compensation, this catholic institution says something completely different from what it supposedly follows.
David Gray I don't necessarily disagree that economic policy at the federal level has an impact, I just think the impact is much smaller than the choices you make as an individual.
David Gray Locate and disable the chemical weapons. Not hard to imagine how Israel could intervene. See below.
David Gray There are unconfirmed reports coming out of this weekend that the Iran's key nuclear enrichment and research facility was bombed severely: http://www.wnd.com/2013/01/sabotage-key-iranian-nuclear-facility-hit/ This site is nearly impervious to bombing, including by bunker buster bombs, thus the attack would have required access to the facility via covert matters. Looks like Israel wasn't bluffing.
David Gray I think that what really matters most isn't so much who occupies the White House, but what choices you made in school. Did you graduate from high school? Did you go to a technical school? Did you go to a college or university? Did you choose a degree that has real world job prospects or did you major in something with very little job utility? The answers to these questions are much more important and relevant as to whether or not you will have a job than who occupies the White House.
David Gray Unfortunately people in power don't know how to be morally against something when they have the power to legislate away. I agree with your assessment. The abortion debate and the constant attempts to legislate abortion rights away from women hurts the GOP. Of course you might as well bang your head against a wall then try to get the religious right within the GOP to back down on that front.
David Gray My favorite line from this weekend was from Feinstein when she countered that adding guards in schools won't work because Columbine had guards. Yet her plan, which was in effect during Columbine, is what will work. Baffles the brain...
David Gray A perfect example of her banning on looks and not power was displayed in the top center of her gun display Thursday. That weapon, the Beretta Cx4 Storm, is a carbine rifle that shoots pistol cartridges, most commonly the 9mm. Yes the weapons certainly looked scary with its front pistol grip, a flashlight and sight mounted on the rails, but it only fires 9mm ammunition which is much less powerful than a .223 or 7.62 cartridge. Ignorance was truly on display for the masses to see. They just had to know what they were looking at.
David Gray Your comment about the .223 not being particularly dangerous is interesting because there has been a lot of side talk surrounding the recent gun control debate. In particular there has been talk of 'armor piercing' ammo being used. Even in her presser Thursday, Blumenthal mentioned that the cops were outgunned and their bullet proof vests would have been worthless. It is correct that the common .223 cartridge will penetrate soft body armor typically worn by police officers. At the same time though 'armor piercing' is already a defined term of which available .223 rounds do not qualify under. But with all the background talk of 'armor piercing ammo' I believe the goal is to raise public suspicion about any cartridge that can penetrate soft body armor (assuming their primary efforts are successful, which I doubt they will be). The problem of course is that nearly ALL hunting cartridges will penetrate soft body armor, thus a ban on them would nearly eliminate all hunting rounds used.
David Gray Yea I've wanted one since I saw it as the primary weapon used in Battlestar Galactica. Shot one at a range once and it was a blast. I only have enough room in the budget for an AR-15 or a Cx4, not both so I'll have to pick which one I get.
David Gray They want all semi-automatic rifles with pistol grips banned. Pretty definitive.
David Gray Waiting to see the specific list of banned guns.
David Gray The whole idea of an 'assault weapon' is as you pointed out a made up term. For example, one of the weapons on display at the presser this afternoon was a Cx4 Storm carbine rifle. It had several additions to the gun to make it look 'menacing' such as a forward pistol grip, flashlight, and scope mounted. But what does a Cx4 Storm shoot? Surprisingly it doesn't shoot rifle cartridges. Instead it shoots common pistol cartridges such as the 9mm. It was designed to accept the same type of ammunition and magazines that Beretta's handgun lines use so that one owner could use the same magazines for multiple weapons. This is a great example of a scary looking weapon that is quite literally less powerful than any rifle that shoots any caliber of rifle cartridges other than a .22.
David Gray Well the space age was the 60s and 70s ;)
David Gray Why should those weapons be 'allowed on the street'? Because the 2nd amendment is not limited to hunters and sportmens. The right of the people to keep and bear arms SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED.
David Gray Hey! A Cx4 Storm is on their list. Interesting thing about that weapon. It doesn't even fire rifle cartridges. It fires standard pistol cartridges that will not penetrate body armor. Of course it looks menacing! So it should be banned!
David Gray Her bill would have done nothing to prevent Newtown.
David Gray Feinstein doesn't have to worry about reelection either. Many of her colleagues do.
David Gray They mentioned that over 1000 people have died due to gun violence since Newtown. They didn't mention that a minute fraction of those died to the guns they want to ban.
David Gray Blumenthal also said our cops are outgunned and couldn't have stopped Lanza because he had an assault rifle. Another false claim.
