Jeff Danovich Another development that is coming along is the use of microgirds. Some larger installations are developing electric grids that power the whole base while independent of the main power grid. The microgrids are based upon alternative energy sources. If the main power grid goes down for any reason, the military will remain functional. Another benefit to military bases becoming self sufficient is that we, the taxpayer get a return on the investment. Through Power Purchase Agreements and Enhanced Use Leases, the DoD and the Federal Government actually see an immediate profit from use of alternative energy.
Jeff Danovich Bravo Yasemin and welcome to PolicyMic!
Jeff Danovich Thanks for the shout out, Max!
Jeff Danovich Good find Tami!
Jeff Danovich It has become acceptable because not enough voices are speaking out against this situation. Email your congressional representatives, alert the media, do what needs to be done to get our story out there. When there is enough public outcry against this, something will be done to correct the situation.
Jeff Danovich This is now becoming part of my daily routine too, Phil. Wake up, shower, make coffee, email my three representatives in Maryland along with Senator Jim Webb, the author of the bill. Senator Webb had a fantastic idea, create the "Next Greatest Generation" by funding our college education. I guarantee that if he could foresee what a disaster this is for the veterans he tried to uplift, he would be utterly disappointed, to say the least.
Jeff Danovich I honestly have no political agenda here other than the VA pays me and my fellow veterans what we were promised when we signed up. I have already been through one mid term exam and I have two more this week, and I have no textbook to study from thanks to no book stipend, which is part of the Post 9-11 GI Bill. I have already taken out an emergency loan from my school, but that went towards food for my family instead. If I were to drop out of school work for a firm that does not pay me for 11 weeks, then I am obligated to file a lawsuit. Why then does the VA get away with not paying me for 11 weeks and I have no choice but to take it.
Jeff Danovich So, basically what the majority of the people who have made comments about this think that it's: A. Perfectly fine to raise the deficit to send troops to war, but it's not ok to raise the budget by a fraction of itself to take care of them once they get home? B. It is better to have too few jobs programs than to have too many? or... C. The timing of this particular bill was bad, so we should just keep more people on the unemployment rolls until after the election?
Jeff Danovich I think the powers that be here at PolicyMic should have made this the other half of a debate piece. To wit: http://www.policymic.com/articles/15141/rand-paul-and-gop-cut-veterans-job-bill-how-vets-became-the-latest-casualty-in-the-war-against-obama
Jeff Danovich President Obama and Governor Romney, what steps are you planning on taking to combat climate change? Will you use more Enhanced Use Leases and Power Purchase Agreements to pursue public/private partnerships that will make us less reliant on fossil fuel and create renewable jobs now and in the future? Will you hold businesses that produce excess Greenhouse Gasses more accountable? Will any new Farm Bill include incentives to grow crops like switchgrass for biofuels?
Jeff Danovich Although the race is considered too close to call, Wisconsin's 21st District Senate seat is leaning Democratic (John Lehman leading the Republican incumbent by less than 800 votes with all precincts reporting). With a Lehman victory, the Democrats will have control of the State Senate. Is this the beginning of gridlock in the Badger State (if the results hold up)?
Jeff Danovich I will seriously look into that. George Washington University has a partnership with LSE. So it could very well be do-able. Thank you Eilidh!
Jeff Danovich Fantastic article Erin. Welcome to PolicyMic.
Jeff Danovich Another thing to consider is that we have been living off an oil infrastructure for over 100 years. Oil is not an infinite resource. We need to give the renewable sector the necessary tools to be viable for when we reach the end of Hubbert's Peak.
Jeff Danovich When you look at it through a strict national security standpoint. I don't think anyone would argue paying a little extra tax wise to ensure our soldier's safety. Personally, I would rather have Marines in the fight instead of babysitting fuel convoys. `Renewable energy lets them do this.
Jeff Danovich Great story Jieun! Very revealing indeed.
Jeff Danovich National polls are worthless. The only numbers that really count at this point are the Electoral College projections. The Washington Post currently has Obama with 196 solid Electoral Delegates and 41 Leaning, while Romney has 170 Solids and 21 leaning. According to the Washington Post, there are 110 Electoral votes up for grabs. It seems that, statistically that Obama has the better chance at this point to reach the magic number of 270 than Romney does.
Jeff Danovich Christine, what are your thoughts on the DoE (and possibly the DoD) committing R & D assets on technology such as this? http://www.energybulletin.net/stories/2012-03-21/space-based-solar-power
Jeff Danovich I sure could have used that article for background when I did a paper on why Chinese Leadership was more tolerant of labor protests (The Trucker's protests in April of 2011) versus human rights protests.
Jeff Danovich Thank you. To further your point about how much Western Media gets to see the leadership of China, all of the lists I looked at for Politburo Standing Committee contenders included Bo Xilai. But what really struck me was how some in the upper echelon of the Chinese Communist Party favor more democratic policies. It's going to be interesting to see how that dynamic will play out in that nation.
Jeff Danovich This story reminds me of the time in Mosul Iraq in 2004 when we drove by a house that was harboring insurgents. As our convoy drove by, we could see and hear a Humvee retro-fitted with gigantic speakers that were blaring "Never Going to Give You Up" by Rick Astley (mind you, this was before Rick Rolling). When our mission was over and we were on our way back to our Forward Operating Base, the same unit was still there and they were still playing that Rick Astley classic. Psychological Warfare at it's finest.
Jeff Danovich Based on the hard work that she has done for this country her entire career, she deserves more than a night out. So much more.
Jeff Danovich Another area of intrigue about the Bo case is his Maoist leanings. Many of Bo's supporters chanted songs from the Cultural Revolution. When Bo called for more economic equality, he did not cite Confucius, but Mao Zedong. Perhaps part of the reason for his ouster was an attempt to curtail a comeback of Maoist thought?
Jeff Danovich Exhibit B in my case that Allen West is an opportunist. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/13/allen-west-fundraises-communists_n_1423544.html?ref=politics&ref=politics
Jeff Danovich I have an even better word for Allen West that seems even more apt. Opportunist. For your reading pleasure.... http://blogs.browardpalmbeach.com/pulp/2012/02/allen_west_goes_on_cbs_to_crit.php
