Keith Irwin Saying these petitions are about economic policy is like saying the civil war was about "states rights". Notice how, with only a couple exceptions, the states with the highest signature counts are former slave states? This is not a coincidence. If the democrat that just got elected to the presidency was a white man this would not be happening.
Keith Irwin Go ahead and shut down your business after $5 million. Then someone else will come in and make their $5 million while you lose market share. Or you could use the excess to reward your employees better for the hard work that made you that $5 million and have happier, more productive workers as well as attract higher quality workers. Also, how many sole proprietors actually make it to that income threshold? I would guess not many.
Keith Irwin Under the logic of the Supreme Court case in question, isn't also then legal for an establishment to reject people based on race? Last time I checked, we settled that one about 50 years ago.
Keith Irwin How can you point out the fact that this same argument was used by opponents of desegregation and still say that it is a valid argument in this case? Do you also think that people who favor segregation are correct to cling to such an argument?
Keith Irwin Can anyone point to an example where Bain, under Romney, successfully returned a company to profitability without gutting worker pay and benefits or significantly reducing the quality of the product produced?
Keith Irwin 1) These companies probably lobby Republicans very strongly and contribute large amounts to their campaigns. 2) The current crop of Ayn Rand following Republicans want to privatize as much of the commons as they can. Voting for a bill that hurts for profit schools is anathema to this.
Keith Irwin Does anyone know if statistics exist on what percentage of government lottery income comes from unhealthy overuse, as opposed to people using it responsibly? (If negative expected value gambling can be considered responsible at all.)
Keith Irwin "The poor were the “unfit” and should not be aided; in the struggle for existence, wealth was a sign of success." Pretty sure the mantra of the current Republican party is actually contained in the definition of social Darwinism.
Keith Irwin 1) I know a number of people that use pseudonyms on facebook to prevent this type of search. 2) This is like if the interviewer asked, "What do you do for fun on the weekends?" It has absolutely no bearing on the ability of the candidate to perform his or her job.
Keith Irwin This may be true in coastal cities where land is scarce, but I've actually had the opposite experience. I live in St. Paul, MN, and I recently bought a flipped foreclosed property. My mortgage is $300/month cheaper than any comparable rental to be found nearby. That being said, I agree with you that viewing a home as an investment is a flawed strategy. Its really just a consumer good.
Keith Irwin If the NFL changed the rules tomorrow to make holding legal, do you think players would not do it to protect the sanctity of their game? People work within the system to change the system. The more important question is which presidential candidate would sign a law reversing Citizens United?
Keith Irwin Apart from the fuzzy metaphysical objections to genetic "enhancement" of human beings it is also a problem from an equality standpoint, as surely these technologies would only be available to well off parents. Children of wealthy parents have enough advantages as is.
Keith Irwin You point out Truman as the exception that proves the rule, but one of the reason Truman won was because he ran against the "do nothing" congress. With the approval ratings of obstructionist congressional republicans hovering around 20% I believe we are poised for a repeat of 1948.
