on PolicyMic
Robin Bugbee Ha! Very funny. That was obviously an iPhone correction gone bad!
Robin Bugbee I do sympathize but re-state: this is not new. It has been going on for at least the last 15 to 20 years. Wehrmacht I was an art director at O&M in the 80's we went from sending type out to doubt ourselves on computer. It got worse at Converse in the 90's when I was definitely a omen an band wit virtually no support. I repeat, none of this is new.
Robin Bugbee Nate: there is very little that is actually new here. Those of us burning to work in broadcasting, publishing or editorial in virtually any firm have (for more than six decades) have had to work for virtually sweatshop wages (or recently for nothing) to have the chance of competing for the decreasing number of actual career slots (with living wages) that open up in any of those industries. All of these businesses have ALWAYS functioned as a kind of funnel with room at the entry level for those who were being supported or aided by well off relatives (most graduates applicants required a living wage salary particularly in areas like NYC.) You should have known all of this long before completing your degree. NONE of this is new.
Robin Bugbee Well have you ever actually held a job? Most if your compatriots spent their vacations and holidays doing "community service" projects in foreign countries or unpaid "internships" in companies where very little was required other than showing up so it is not surprising that so many of you are unprepared for work and clueless to what "work" means.
Robin Bugbee Terrible response Benny and absolutely wrong. As someone who has worked in advertising & graphic design most of my life I can assure you that you must stand up for what you believe in at all times. Regardless of the potential outcome. It's called having a conscience. On more than one occasion I declined to work on accounts I felt were compromised (tobacco) or refused to travel to countries outwardly supporting racist ideology (South Africa during apartheid). You'd better know what the core issues that form you really are because if you don't stand up for them you may have a job but your soul will be compromised.
Robin Bugbee Snide, cynical, sarcastic but not illuminating. And what in God's name does Dianne Feinstein's carry permit and weapon have anything to do with an image of the President that was simply not funny and quite disrespectful. I repeat, the poll this policymic entry was based on was simply on serious and not worthy of the space and the spotlight given it. Regardless of Will Bishop's contention that "this article is for entertainment" I think Policymic would be better served by leaving that "entertainment" to others.
Robin Bugbee Hard to believe that this could have much to do with the NYT op-ed piece. That would take an awful lot of difficult (if not impossible) coordination. I'm a little disapointed with all the wild especulation voiced in replies to your original post. Come on guys...unless you have clear factual information (and I see very little of that here) your "feelings" and "hopes" are really quite irresponsible.

Robin Bugbee No Will-I won't "chill out". You may think this is funny- but then your standards might be a bit lower than mine. Few people would consider a drawing of President Obama brandishing a pistol very funny if published by a right wing or tea party faction. It is no funnier when used by Policymic for any reason. It simply is NOT funny. Policymic: please take it down and Will: how about raising your standards?
Robin Bugbee This poll is not serious. Policymic should be ashamed of giving it coverage and should take this garbage down.
Robin Bugbee This poll is not serious and as much as I like Policymic I seriously think they should take this garbage down.
Robin Bugbee This is not a serious survey and should not be considered as such. I am really dismayed that Policymic would resort to the kind of gross electronic tabloid journalism that uses a disgusting direspectful image of President Oba brandishing a handgun. Your use of this image to achieve your own agenda is no better than the use of a similar histrionic image by fringe political groups to achieve theirs. I urge you to take the image down.
Robin Bugbee "Spare me your racism" What in God's name does that mean. Are you accusing me of racism for stating that "there is no question that young black men are endangered simply because they are young black men in a society hostile to them". No reasonable person would disagree with that.
Robin Bugbee Supreme Court decision: They decided: Obamacare is Constitutional. Years may pass. Another court could change it's mind. BUT UNTIL IT DOES, THE LAW IS CONSTITUTIONAL. And I repeat what I said earlier: to continue to insist that it is unconstitutional in light of the decision the court reached is idiotic and wrong. Detroit: Detroit is a mess. The city council and city attorney have blocked and blocked and blocked any attempt to put the place on a firm footing. I believe that after incredible corruption over a long period, NO ONE in that city is capable of fixing the problems they face and it is a true blessing that the state is finally taking over.
Robin Bugbee "Then you must consider me a racist": your words, not mine Mr. Shelton. Anyone who, after more than four years and continued investigations is still questioning Mr. Obama's legitimacy is no longer doing it out of ignorance but out of stupidity and possible malice. The health care legislation was upheld by the Supreme Court. To continue to insist that it is unconctitutional is idiotic and wrong. "My favorite Mayor is Dave Bing of Detroit"? Good luck. Detroit is basically an undeclared bankrupcy and Mr. Bing has been supplanted by a court appointed city manager appinted to get the city back on the right track.
Robin Bugbee I think it is probably a waste of my time to continue to reply to your statements. Just because you assert something is true...that does not make it true. It is absolutely true that a white person dressed in a hoodie is simply viewed as choosing to make a certain fashion statement but a young person of color is frequently seen as threatening, scary and dangerous. It is not necessry to enage in a debate with you about something so patently obvious. You are cerntainly entitled to your opinion and I am simply no longer interested in debating that with you.
Robin Bugbee I assume you are being funny. You are not. Stop being so cynical about important issues like this. There is not enough love in the world. Please be a positive force working towards positive goals. If we all take a "Live it's Saturday night!" attitude towards everything we confront out society would disintegrate into madness and depression.
Robin Bugbee Once again: please get your facts right: there is no indication that Trayvon was as you say "wandering around a neighborhood...apparently checking out houses". And once again I repeat there is no question that young black men are endangered simply because they are young black men in a society hostile to them. Had he been white: with his "face concealed in a hoody" he would be guilty of nothing. The fact that he was dressed that way was probably foolish. I would have advised him that even though he should have had the right to dress this way...in 2013 in this country, it is dangerous to do so. Sad.
Robin Bugbee I agree with most of what you have said Mr. Starley but it also must be said and admitted that although it is true that there are legitimate disagreements with Mr. Obama that anyone is free to hold and espouse: there is no denying that its a pretty good bet that those questioning the President's legitimacy on the basis of national origin, those insisting he must present his educational records, those equating him with Adolph Hitler and others of his ilk. those claiming that his health care legislation is unconstitutional when it clearly has proven not to be so, harbor a palpable hatred of the man that cannot be explained any other way than an by an inability to accept a President of African American origin.
Robin Bugbee Of course you are either being sarcastic, arrogant, foolish or all three. All people are capable of being racist. Even you Mr. Dressler. It is all of our responsibilities to make sure we each confront the racial stereotypes we may harbour and change the views that permit them to exist. Much of what has been said in these pages (particularly by those taking Mr. Zimmerman's side} have been patently racist even though those writing the comments have clearly felt no racism within them. They are wrong about that.
Robin Bugbee I do not know if your assertion about the racial makeup of The Retreat at Twin Lakes is accurate (I would be surprised if you do either) but even if it is, that, in no way, changes the real facts: "had he been white and dressed the same way it is likely nothing would have happened". Additionally, your charge that "he was probably guilty of assault and battery of Zimmerman" is pretty predictable. You seem very willing to assume that just because this boy was in a neighborhood not his own, he was of color and dressed in a way that threatens you...that is enough to assume that he was at fault and was probably the aggressor. It is entirely possible that Trayvon had no knowedge that Zimmerman was armed.
Robin Bugbee "Gangster rap and Hip Hop are not helping" ...white perceptions of back men. Gee, that's too bad isn't it? That's a lit like saying white meth users and white stock manipulator a and rapists are not helping the black perceptions of white men. We don't make the assumption that because some white men do bad things that most white men are bad...why is is right or acceptable to assume that because some young black men do bad things that a fear of all young black men is understandable: both offensive and absurd.
Robin Bugbee There is so much wrong with your assumptions related to the actual incident here. Trayvon was apparently doing nothing Mie than walking home: not looking into the windows of private homes. He was guilty of nothing more that being in a white neighborhood after dark. Had he been white and dressed the same way it is likely nothing would have happened. Millenials have not escaped inherent racist attitudes because they are young and educated. Only when foolish, ignorant stereotypes like those voiced here are eliminated will racist attitudes die. There are many dangers inherent in being young, black and male in this country but they are not necessarily the fault of young black men.
