Our Story

At PolicyMic, we're convinced that news doesn't need to be sterile and politics don't need to be partisan. That's why we've created the first democratic online news platform to engage millennials in debates about real issues.

we believe in amplifying excellent unheard voices

At the heart of PolicyMic is our democratic system. We believe in the power of the crowd to choose the leading voices. On PolicyMic, the community decides who gets to speak. Passively reading the news is a thing of the past. The more you respond to articles, share your ideas, and accumulate 'mics' from others, the more you'll be able to do and say. As you accumulate enough mics to become a PolicyMic Pundit, you'll be given the chance to find your audience and debate your rivals.

Changing the tone of the conversation.

PolicyMic is all about the spirit of debate. We're fed up with hyper-partisanship in the media and deafening and extreme media personalities on both sides. We're giving a platform to the next generation of pundits and reporters who are ready for productive discussion and a new kind of dialogue. Success and prestige on our site won't be driven by how loudly you speak, but by how thoughtfully you participate.

It's all in the game

"Debate, politics — where's the fun in that?" PolicyMic is designed to engage a generation of young people who find politics petty and distant by being fun social platform for meaningful conversation. Whether you're a political junkie or just the occasional news reader, you'll have fun on PolicyMic. How to play the game.

Step aside, media pundits

If you're anything like us, you're ready to see new voices challenge the so-called "experts." At PolicyMic, we've democratized the news. Prove yourself to your peers and you'll become one of the defining new voices. When you make it to the top, you'll gain access to an editor who will help improve your work.

How we got started

PolicyMic was founded in New York City by recent Harvard and Stanford grads Chris Altchek and Jake Horowitz. We're longtime friends, but political nemeses who have been debating each other for as long as we can remember. One thing we agree upon is that the mainstream media fails to engage our generation in real conversation. During Chris' experiences working at the SEIU and at Goldman Sachs, and Jake's time traveling as a researcher across the Middle East, we've both met so many inspiring young political leaders. We set out to build a platform to amplify your voice and your ideas.

we believe in the power of a thoughtful community to control the media

With the addition of Josh Nuni as the third founder, an experienced political organizer with big web development and design ideas, we hit the ground running. Thanks to a talented group of more than 20 advisors, we launched our beta site in June 2011. Now with a full-time design and editing team, we've assembled a core team of 600 writers from over 75 countries across the globe. We're a growing community and are looking for people like you to be involved!
