Can Rick Santorum Defeat President Obama?

Rick Santorum is gaining ground in recent Iowa polls and this worries other Republican candidates. This may be a short-term bump for the former senator, but it also raises the question: Is Santorum actually a viable candidate in the 2012 presidential elections?

As other GOP candidates take notice of Santorum’s rise in Iowa, some have stepped up their direct attacks against him. One reason for Santorum’s rise is the increasing support from conservative Christians. This support, however, is not enough to help him nationally at the moment. Even though Santorum has solid experience in Congress, his socially conservative views polarize many voters and hurt his chances in moderate states.

What do you think? If Santorum can emerge as the Republican nominee, can he defeat President Obama in the upcoming presidential election?
