Can you come up with a comprehensive (or, screw it, a non-comprehensive) list of things President Obama has done that are traditionally liberal? Liberal at all?

Of course, many answers rarely take into account actual facts and policies. But here it is, a (very) quick overview of some key Democrat versus Republican issues over the last two years, and Obama’s real or perceived role in them.

1. The Individual Health Care Mandate:  

You know, that unconstitutional provision in “Obamacare” that requires every American to have health care coverage or else pay a fine to the government. The individual mandate was a product of the right-wing think tank The Heritage Foundation and supported by Newt Gingrich. And it was a far cry from the public option the President campaigned on:

2. Cap and Trade: 

You know, that job-killing energy tax forced down our throats by the fake global warming scientists and Obama’s socialist agenda. Except many Republicans have proposed or backed cap-and-trade though the years, including Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Richard Luger (Indiana), Lindsey Graham (S.C.), Scott Brown (Mass.), and John McCain (Arizona).

3. Debt Ceiling: 

Remember the debate last summer in Congress over raising the debt ceiling? The fundamental issue between the right and left was raising the debt ceiling without parts put in place to slash government spending. Never mind that Reagan raised the debt ceiling 18 times, or that Congress “deciding” to hone up for money already spent has happened without regard since 1913, no matter who was in the White House. 

In an 11th hour deal, Obama agreed to sign and put into law the Budget Control Act of 2011.  Again, never mind that Moody’s warned Congress of a credit downgrade should the bickering continue. Either by caving in or under the guise of compromise, President Obama signed into law a bill cutting $2.4 trillion from government agencies and programs, without any changes to the tax code. Liberal?

4. Bush Tax Cuts: 

While publicly against extending the Bush Tax cuts, President Obama was faced with a hostile Congress in late 2010 as they were set to expire. The war waged on for weeks (months?) in the media and government over what was in essence the biggest tax cuts in history, should they be renewed.  A Google search for “Obama and 2010 Bush Tax Cuts” returns the following two results first, which are pretty self-explanatory:

5. War on Drugs: 

On the campaign trail, Obama repeatedly said he supported the use of medical marijuana and would not use Justice Department resources to override state laws on the issue.  Right now, 16 states and D.C. have voter-sponsored state laws approving the sale of medical marijuana, and nation-wide 77% of voters approve of marijuana prescriptions for ill patients.  Thousands of dispensaries around the country pay taxes (sales and property), provide jobs, and are regulated by state and local laws.  But the Obama administration, along with the Drug Enforcement Administration (headed by Bush-implant Michele Leonhart), continues to violate state sovereignty and go after law-abiding businesses.

So is President Obama a Liberal?  I suppose.  It is much easier to run for President on a transformational platform than actually be transformational once you get to the White House.  But my point is twofold:

• The reason Obama has been losing support it's because his base, and Democrats in general, are more liberal than he is. The compromises he’s made and the policies he has implemented are not as “radical” as what he ran on. 

• Obama never had support from the right – not from lawmakers and not from voters.  He should stop trying to gain their support, compromising, or whatever the hell it is he is trying to do. His approval ratings are dropping because the people who elected him are not getting what they voted for, they are getting a traditional moderate.
