With President Obama’s recent announcement of his “evolved” stance on gay marriage, many Americans are breathing a sigh of relief, many are jumping for joy, and an equal number of people are shaking their heads in disapproval. Regardless of your view on gay marriage, we should all consider the nature of politics and check ourselves before we attribute this to the “hope” and “change” that Obama promised us four years ago: Barack Obama is a ruthless Chicago politician, not a champion of the people, and much less a champion of the gay rights movement. In reality, he kept the gay voters at arms-length for most of his term, but when faced with dwindling enthusiasm for his reelection, Obama “evolved” to suit his selfish political interests.
This “evolution” was a highly calculated move by the Obama administration for no other purpose than to further divide the country, play on people’s emotions, and distract the country from an economy that is showing signs of serious illness; all for the purpose of boosting his chances of reelection.
The media’s coverage of Obama’s announcement is proving that this charade was a brilliant move for the Obama administration, and here are some reasons why:
- Good Morning America co-host Robin Roberts claimed she was “getting chills” just thinking about the “historic moment” when Obama announced his evolution. “There's no denying when a president speaks out for the first time like that, it is history," she said.
- Ellen DeGeneres called Obama “brave” for evolving.
- “This is beyond unifying — it's electrifying,” said Eugene Sepulveda, former co-chair of Obama’s LGBT council.
- The Associated Press released an article titled “Obama gay marriage support seen as world precedent.”
I don’t need to, much less want to, list every ecstatic response to Obama’s Machiavellian political move. While this is seen as a large step forward for a minority of the population, the only reason Obama changed his stance is because he believed it would be a large step forward in his reelection campaign, so that come January 2013, he can continue to do what he has done for the past four years: advance Wall Street and corporate interests, grow the size and scope of the federal government, continue to create a population entirely dependent on government benefits, and strip away our precious civil liberties -- all while making the American people like it.
