Ron Paul Wins CNN Arizona Republican Debate

In the final Republican debate before Super Tuesday, and perhaps the last of the race, Texas Congressman Ron Paul (R-Texas) made quick work of his opponents.

Though not known for his stellar oratory abilities or powerful stage presence, the libertarian gadfly stood out among the remaining candidates during Wednesday night's contest for the same reason he has been able to stay in the race thus far: his consistent and convincing defense of free markets and small government.

Paul opened his time by defending his criticism of Santorum as fake fiscal conservative. In response to CNN moderator John King's question, "Why did you call Senator Santorum a fake fiscal conservative?" Paul quipped, "Because he's a fake!" After the massive applause died down, Paul pointed out that most politicians are fiscal hawks during their campaigns, but they tend to be far less principled once elected. Santorum, who admitted he wouldn't cut defense spending, and supported dozens of federal spending increases while in Congress, perfectly fits this description.

During a slap fight that broke out over earmarks between the frontrunners, Paul was criticized for sending federal money back to his district. Paul rightly pointed out that he earmarks funds for his district because the money would otherwise be spent on wars and bank bailouts by the Executive Branch. Though he prefers the money not be taken from taxpayers in the first place, Paul argued that earmarks ensure that some of the money is sent back to the people who it actually belongs to.

Ron Paul Calls Santorum 'A Fake'

On the auto bailout, Paul argued that all bailouts are economically harmful because they represent legalized theft. "Do we praise bank robbers if they are successful?" As many economists have long argued, Paul pointed out that bailouts save failing businesses at the expense of the rest of the economy, and that letting companies like General Motors fail is necessary if the economy is going to recover.

Should the government be involved in issues like contraception? Paul says no, because that's where the problem arises. Congress legislates morality; people of differing religious persuasions then fight incessantly over whose morality will be the law of the land. Much like abortion or gay marriage, the answer, according to Paul, is to return the decision to use birth control, and the cost of using it, to states and individuals.

Top Story: 4 Highlights From the Arizona Republican Debate

The Texas congressman also laid into Santorum for voting for Planned Parenthood while claiming to be a pro-life Senator. Santorum didn't deny the charge, but justified his vote by claiming that he authored legislation that would fund abstinence only education. Paul responded, "There's always an excuse for the spending."

Paul used a question about immigration to criticize our foreign policy of "worrying about the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan." He also claimed that we need to eliminate the incentives, mainly welfare, that encourage people to immigrate to America illegally. Meanwhile, the rest of the candidates argued over how to successfully arrest Mexican immigrants and build big fences along the southern border.

Ron Paul Explains Why War With Iran Is Wrong

While Santorum, Romney, and Gingrich stuck to the neoconservative line that we have to keep building our military and policing the Middle East, Paul, following a long line of foreign policy experts, explained that we need to stop fighting aggressive wars and consider our role in fostering the rise of violent dictators around the world.

Because our influence in the region, and the fact that Iran doesn't have a nuclear bomb, Paul also claimed that the likelihood of Iran starting a nuclear war is minuscule. He also highlighted the enormous costs of an aggressive foreign policy, citing the Soviets as an example of what happens to countries that overextend themselves abroad.

All of the candidates took reasonable stances on education policy. Each correctly took shots at teacher unions and argued that the federal Department of Education needs to be reformed. But as Paul opined, the other three contenders didn't go far enough. Education should be a state and local issue, a position no other Republican on the stage consistently defended while in office.

At this point in the race, it's unlikely that Paul will win the Republican nomination, trailing far beyond Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum as he is. But after tonight's debate, the Texas congressman has illustrated why he's the best choice. If Republican voters, supposed conservatives, can't see that, then they deserve the champion of big government that their next president will be.

Tonight Ron Paul once again demonstrated that he is the consistent conservative - a pure voting record and a pure conscience. The other candidates are big government phonies.

If you vote for anyone else but Ron Paul you will get more of the same and in a few years the economics will fail if the spending is not cut in a major way. Everyone knows you cannot spend 42 cents of every dollar spent by government forever. Wake up and vote for Ron Paul while there is still time.

Here is the bottom line. Ron Paul understands the core of issues that escapes the others. He understands the problems at a level that makes him the teacher and they the students. He sees issues and problems at a level that simply put are over the head of the masses. Ron Paul 2012

True, Ron Paul may not be the best speaker, but I'd rather have somebody who didn't speak well who had great policies, than someone who was a slick speaker, who lied regularly and had horrible policies.

It's easy to not have numerous skeletons in one's closet if they don't take positions that put one's self out there; when you haven't had a major bill authored by you passed in the last few decades. Except, of course, save for the osteology of a few odious outlines to omit the U.S. from the U.N.

Dear Paulbot,

Please learn some grammar, spelling, and punctuation. I would try to start a dialogue with you beyond this letter, but I don't have time to educate you on all of the things you have become ignorant of as a result of your complacency with thinking Ron Paul is a politician and a legitimate candidate for the General election. That is all.

Not sure what you're trying to prove. Doesn't sound like Ron wrote them at all. If a story comes out in the L.A. Times does that mean that L.A. feels that way? Your digging lets face it. The man has ZERO skeletons in his closet. They found a mysterious tooth in a closet in Ron Pauls Time Share.

Um, post-bailout General Motors has once again become the largest firm in the auto industry, hardly the mark of a "failing company".

Paul's "if I didn't earmark it, they would have wasted it" excuse is weak and hardly a consistent expression of his conservative principles. And the Soviet Union's demise was due much more to flawed macroeconomic policies at home and a failed attempt at reform than it was due to them overextending themselves abroad, though that reason does play into the mythos that Reagan spent the Soviets into oblivion.

I will say that Paul is right about the Iran situation, but that is one of the few correct positions he holds.

GM is achieving its "success" with accounting gimmickry, while continuing to owe the US taxpayers $25 billion, after the company was stolen from the rightful owners. GM was given favorable treatment from the IRS to the point where it hasn't had to pay federal income taxes. GM relies heavily on the government-induced ultra-low interest rates and tax incentives. GM was and still is a ward of the state, and any success must include an asterisk.

Here's a newsflash Ed: GM was the largest auto manufacturer in the world when they were losing billions of dollars. Moreover, we the tax payers remain on the hook for about $14 billion. Blockbuster could be profitable again if the federal gov't gave them $14 billion.

Finally, the real myth is that the auto companies would have just closed their doors if not for the bailout. They would have gone into bankruptcy like countless other companies before them and come out a leaner, more profitable company. The argument against this at the time was that nobody would want to buy a car from a company in bankruptcy. Of course this argument never made any sense since people continue to fly on airplanes run by companies in bankruptcy. Moreover, GM filed for bankruptcy in the end anyway.

One issue brought up with GM/Chrysler declaring bankrupcy was the effect this would have on the supply chain of subcontractors who make tires, seats, bumpers, etc. and employ hundreds of thousands of workers in the US. These parts are supplied JIT, the subcontractors position was they could not then wait perhaps months for a bankrupcy judge to release funds to pay them for the parts (or perhaps not pay them at all), they argued this disruption in payment could put them out of business and potentially hundreds of thousands more people out of work.

There's "nothing conservative" about limiting the size of the federal government based upon the Supreme Law of the Land, and upon supporting market processes? Since when? Perhaps you refer to Dark-side conservativism, which only proves the liberalism of RonPaul.

GM channel stuffs like crazy. Besides, this whole arguing about whether GM could be saved or not is irrelevant. In capitalism failure = bankruptcy. It's how the system purges itself of inefficiencies. Also, it was YOUR MONEY, so go buy GM bonds if that's what YOU want to do, but don't force others.

That's a clever point, but you left out a relevant quote: "Though [Paul] prefers the money not be taken from taxpayers in the first place..." In other words, he votes against spending every single time.

There's also the fact that earmarks don't increase federal spending in the slightest, because the money has already been appropriated.

National Review (surprisingly) had a good piece on this a few years back. http://www.nationalreview.com/nrd/article/?q=NzgwNzI2Y2RiMmYyYzZkMzRhMDFkZGE5NDI5MGU5Nzg=

Zachary Taylor, you missed the point, Ron Paul is in no way calling the people of Michigan thieves, he is calling the federal government thieves. If I steal money and give it to a charity, the charity is not a thief I am, this was the point Ron Paul was trying to make. That is why he claims bailouts are immoral not because we are bailing people out, it is how we are getting the money to bail them out.

@Cameron: That's not true of all earmarks, only those that deal with money already appropriated. But even that still increases spending. Either earmarks are taking away money the agency would spend elsewhere (not benefiting a specific interest group), or Congress knowingly appropriates more money than necessary expecting some of it to be earmarked. Surely Ron Paul does not believe Congress forgets about earmarks every time they write a spending bill.

To those above/below: Bailouts (at least ostensibly) end up with the government getting its money back. And the auto bailout was aimed at revitalizing an entire city, as opposed to the special interests most of Paul's pork aided. I'm in favor of neither, but one's clearly more justifiable than

Earmarks allocate money that is already budgeted or taxed. If Ron Paul could go back and not take the money, he would. If Congress doesn't allocate the funds, the Executive will (not to local taxpayers). Wall St/Auto bailouts were NOT budgeted/taxed. Money was printed or borrowed from China.

Here is the consistency you asked for. Dr. Paul doesn't vote for unconstitutional taxing and spending. However, if others insist on passing illegal bills he earmarks the funding to ensure it goes to the correct places. He doesn't vote to pass the bills. That is the difference.

you don't understand earmarks. Some can be for things that help community and others for personal interests. If someone approves an earmark to build a building on a piece of land that they own , for instance, the building might benefit the community but the real value goes to the land owner.

You obviously don't understand. the entire nation got robbed by the bail outs and the money that paul ear marks has already been stolen. So both fund and consistently labeled stolen. the difference is he can try to get some back to the people in the case of his ear marks. Think my friend.

The bank bailout shored up the entire economy and the taxpayer made a profit off of it, so it didn't cost me a cent. The auto bailout hasn't been profitable, but at least it was aimed out helping the entire city of Detroit as well as millions of Americans elsewhere. The auto bailout kept an industry that employed people afloat.

Ron Paul's pork, in contrast, didn't create businesses that helped the economy or could eventually sustain itself. It went to very small, specific projects that only helped part of his district.

How is the former case "stealing" from me while the later is "giving back?"

These two individuals are correct. It is the job of Congressmen to ensure that their district is represented in Congress. A part of this task is ensureing that tax dollars your constitutants pay into the system go back into your district.

They can undergo a ch 11 bankrupcy and come out without the debt or destroying the jobs AND not cost tax payers money. This option destroys Union and CEO perks, people that caused the problem are hurt, not us.

Actually Ron Paul is in 2nd overall in delegates according to CNN check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=n7PDwmDlS7I

Ron Paul could very well be the republican nominee in fact I'll go as far as saying he probably will be.

Darcy -

You are wrong, of course, but let's put that aside for a second.

I need you to acknowledge something so that I can reassure myself that Ron Paul's supporters aren't mindless cultists. I need you to acknowledge that there is less than a 1% chance of Ron Paul getting the Republican nomination.

In the event that he somehow won a plurality of delegates (and the other candidates didn't pool their delegates to another candidate), the GOP would just change the rules and block him from getting the nomination. And hardly anyone would care.

The best case scenario for Paul is a Americans Elect nomination. This would (hilariously) ensure Obama's election, along with the continued growth of government.

You could try coming at me with something other than, "you are so wrong," and actually had factual information backing up your claims. I have no doubt the GOP would do anything they could to stop it..but how does that make me WRONG about the delegates being ESTIMATED currently?

Oh and dear, if they have to change the rules to get someone out..how would "hardly anyone care?" Jesus, clearly you have NO respect for democracy or the delegate system your party put in place. Who's the cultist, who would ignore rules just to keep the person they don't like, out? Get real.

I completely agree that Ron Paul is not going to win. Yet, I have to say I'm kind of disturbed by this sort of comment, because I've seen you do it before. Just give your own argument. Don't try to force people to "acknowledge" or "prove" something before you'll even listen to them. If you think they're hopelessly brainwashed, ignore them. Otherwise, engage them. There's no reason to make snide ad-hom attacks.

You don't seem to understand, those estimates are pure guesses. Only the candidates themselves really know how many delegates they're getting. The Paul camp is claiming 2nd at the moment. Whilst it isn't the best source, it is more accurate than the above.

Actually Christopher Altchek that source is not accurate this quote is taken directly from the link "The AP uses results from local caucuses to calculate the number of national delegates each candidate eventually will win and assigns those delegates at the end of the caucus." Here are the accurate numbers
Romney: 107
Gingrich: 43
Santorum: 43
Paul: 35
http://www.thegreenpapers.com/P12/R-PU.phtml
Source only reports currently confirmed delegates.

I'm not one for conspiracies (unlike Ron Paul!), but the audience was packed with Romney people. Good for him. He's a good organizer ($$$).

However, it's clear at this point that Romney is allied with Ron Paul. Paul has not attacked Romney in many ads, and works to tear down Romney's challengers. Plus, Romney and Paul's wives are good friends.

It stands to reason that the crowd cheered Ron Paul because they were Romney supporters who appreciated Paul's efforts on their behalf.

The ultimate irony here is that Ron Paul's supporters will deny all of this common sense analysis and declare...I don't know. Something crazy.

Also: everyone read Ron Paul's newsletters. We can learn from racist people like Ron Paul and avoid their mistakes.

He is not "one for conspiracies".. How do you know they are allied? He's had attack ads out on Romney. Why, when he attacks the new front-runner, suddenly he's on Romney's team? Ron Paul wants to be known as the conservative, he doesn't want to let Santorum have a surge on those false pretenses.

As RoadToSerfdom posted below, here's an authoritative expose http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HP-mYq4DaJI . I can understand why you're not aware of the debunking of these newsletters, as the liberal media loves to paint Republicans as racist but isn't so good about retracting their mistakes.

They haven't been debunked. There were dozens of them with racist content, and Ron Paul only had a handful of "writers" employed. Over a period of years, he never caught a single one of these comments or fired anyone for it. Some of these articles even had his signature. Some of them were written in the first person and even talked about recent events in his family, so he was obviously involved with the writing process.

Ron Paul didn't even deny writing some of the racist comments when first asked in a '95 interview (I can link if you want0-- he defended them, and then later changed his tune. What a shmuck.

Zachary Taylor - the '95 interview is out of context, as is most of the mud that jerks sling at Ron Paul (it never sticks). These racist accusations contradict everything Ron Paul's philosophy emphasizing individualism - racism is a dirty form of collectivism. If you buy into this racism nonsense, you have worse critical thinking skills than the most militant birthers.

In the interview he is talking about the economic newsletter, which is the one he usually wrote.

The author of the newsletters was James B. Powell. It wasn't originally reported on, but some of them did have the authors name attached.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-295TQg718

Also, the newsletter was published for like 20 years with hundreds of issues. The insensitive language only appeared in a few of them. Like less than 1%.

So yeah, debunked.

Please try to be civil. I'm sorry your Messiah isn't perfect, but everything I'm claiming is demonstrable. Politifact found 35 offensive statements and it only looked through a sample. TNR published multiple articles listing offensive statements because it couldn't fit them all into one, and there's even more if you read the full TNR archives. And Ron Paul did sign letters with inflammatory language endorsing his newsletter (TNR 2012), as well as newsletters themselves (Reuters).

To clarify, the comment that begins "out of context" was to Zack and the one that beings "Please try to be civil" was to Ikki.

One more thing, @Zack: The lack of critical thinking is assuming that Ron Paul perfectly professes every ideal libertarian value, while other politicians are simply corrupt. Ron Paul is a politician, and one of his mentors, Murray Rothbard, explicitly recomended a "redneck strategy" whereby libertarians ally themselves temporarily with racists. Ron Paul probably never supported racists' long term goals, but he did enter a tactical alliance. (He does refuse to return donations from hate groups, unlike other candidates.) And that's distasteful enough for many people.

I know that Ron Paul isn't perfect, but you are being duped into this smear campaign. I have read the source material, listened to the interview, and Ron Paul doesn't admit that he wrote racist remarks AND the racism completely goes against everything else he's written (I've read several of his books, and hundreds of his articles). He's never been accused of making a racist statement despite being on camera for tens of thousands of hours. Zachary - you're grasping at straws man! Wake up! It is a smear every bit as silly as birtherism!

@ Zachary part 2 - I happen to be a Jewish Ron Paul supporter perfectly happy with his accepting donations from neo-Nazis etc. What matters is how he votes and what he advocates, and I'm glad that the neo-Nazis are funding Ron Paul's effort to spread the message of freedom, tolerance and the rule of law instead of their message of hate.

Zach, even politifact points out that of the 35 offensive statements, that they would not be offensive to everyone. They also point out that the 35 statements appeared in only 9 of the newsletters out of 100's of them.

They were not all racist or whatever. They were only classified as inflammatory. And some of the ones that have been mentioned have been outright shot down by the people they thought would have been offensive. Such as the fact that AIDS is a result of lifestyle choices.

I remember in 2008 when I first started liking Ron Paul, what he said about the reasons we got attacked on 9/11 was "offensive" to some. Even though it was the plain out truth.

And it's been proven he didn't write it. So whatever.

The newsletters? Maybe 1% of his newsletters had racial tones and they were proven to be written by James B Powell. Dr. Paul has disavowed them. He doesn't endorse them. And they contradict what he stands for. It was a mistake, but calling HIM racist, for things he didn't write is morally wrong.

Ron Paul did not write those newsletter articles, they were published anonymously without his knowledge - and he is not racist. The ultimate irony is that we know the truth - and you are telling it... then wonder why we don't agree with what is not common sense, but fabrication.
