Democrats Should Vote For Ron Paul Instead of Barack Obama In 2012 Presidential Race

Rep. Ron Paul's (R-Texas) presidential bid has been attacked from all sides.

Unsurprisingly, Democrats and others on the left are some of the Texas congressman's most vocal detractors, calling his views on climate change, health care, and dozens of others issues problematic. But despite their skepticism, Paul is the only candidate in either party that will advance several key policies which progressives really care about, and they would be wise to support him for president in 2012.

The Left is generally considered to be more critical of America's aggressive foreign policy. Under the Obama administration the Democratic Party has certainly softened their stance on war and other types of foreign intervention, but left-leaning, anti-war voters are one of the reasons President Barack Obama won in 2008. If those voters really want to see less U.S. aggression on the international stage, Paul is the man to implement those changes. As Robin Koerner argued in a July Huffington Post column, the libertarian candidate has been making the case for non-intervention for 30 years, and that he "...happens to be a member of the Republican Party is a lot less important than the principles that we should be voting on."

Gay marriage is another issue where Paul splits with his party and sides with progressives. Despite his admittedly conservative religious views, Paul doesn't push a constitutional ban on gay marriage or endorse civil unions for homosexual couples. He prefers to keep the federal government out of the issue entirely. Liberals may cringe at the idea of the federal government not intervening to support marriage equality, but Congress has come down on the wrong side of the marriage debate before. Paul's solution, which is to leave the issue to individual states, would prevent that in the future. It's also on firmer legal ground since the founders believed the states capable of handling most of their own affairs.

Criticism of the drug war is very common in California, which also happens to be one of the most liberal states in the country. As my home state illustrates, many on the left recognize the foolishness of the drug war. They cite the loss of the personal liberty, the enormous costs, and the increase in violent crime caused by our current drug policies. So does Paul. Similar to the marriage issue, the solution is to get federal government out of the drug prohibition business. On this point, take note that the Obama administration has maintained the same hostile policy toward drugs as previous administrations.

Obama's hypocrisy isn't limited to the drug war either. Despite campaigning as an advocate of civil liberties and a critic of the Bush administration's position on issues like executive authority, torture, and warrantless wiretapping, the President has continued George W. Bush's policies. As popular liberal blogger Ed Brayton said of Obama's use of signing statements,"...we [liberals] were all highly critical of the Bush administration for issuing signing statements exactly like this one, where he said that he would refuse to enforce this or that provision in a bill or would interpret it in such a way as to preserve executive authority. If you criticized Bush for issuing such statements and you don’t criticize Obama for it, you’re a hypocrite. And guess what? Obama was one of those people. So were lots of members of Congress." One of the few representatives who weren't and the only one currently running for president: Ron Paul.

Liberal critics of my suggestion that they vote for Paul will undoubtedly respond that they can't endorse his economic policies. Perhaps. But at least with Paul, they know what they're getting, a consistent civil libertarian. His voting record is the evidence if they doubt. They know the same can't be said of president Obama. Furthermore, isn't compromise part of getting things done in Washington D.C.?  It's certainly better to get part of your agenda through Congress rather than none of it.

If Paul loses either the upcoming primary or general election, however, that's what happens. If another Republican takes the White House, liberals can say farewell to the possibility of ending the drug war or the paranoia over gay marriage. If Obama wins reelection, they get more of the same. America will continue fighting unnecessary wars, prosecuting drug use and trampling on civil liberties.

It's not even about that anymore. Red team, blue team are all the same corrupt organizations. Wake up to the fact that Ron Paul does not accept lobbying money, he is getting peanuts from Wall Street while Obama|Romney are getting tens of millions. Look how the main stream media calls him unelectable and smears him. Those to me at least are huge reasons to vote for him. He is a danger to this corrupt status quo

The Discussion

Obama's supposed failures on the economy were behind the setback in the mid-terms and will continue to haunt him in the coming election. It is a message that the economy is issue #1 for average Americans struggling with unemployment. Given this, it is difficult for liberal voters to support a candidate who plans to end the Federal Reserve, refuses to raise the debt ceiling, and plans to lower fuel prices by encouraging offshore drilling.

Good article. In a way Ron Paul's ideology is good for both sides. The whole left vs right paradigm is stupid anyways. The two parties are so intertwined that it's merely an illusion of choice. Ron Paul is the only one that breaks that paradigm and encourages us to restore America to the way it was meant to be, laid out by the Constitution.

The Establishment big bankers game plan. The Establishment who owns the MSM.
There number one goal, piss off the RP supporters.
Ignore RP on the MSM except to tell people he can not win. (We have all seen this on the debates)
Cause the RP supporter to sit out the election. Obama wins.

"If another Republican takes the White House, liberals can say farewell to the possibility of ending the drug war or the paranoia over gay marriage. Great article, Cameron! On a similar note, the largest contributor to both Obama and Romney are Goldman Sachs. If you're a liberal, how could you possibly vote for Obama? A vote for him is a vote for empire, indefinite detention, torture, the drug war, corporate-state capitalism, assassinations, wiretapping, prosecution of whisteblowers, etc.

You are right, Ron Paul's past voting history and campaign message show his consistent approach. However, your premise that that should makes him more favorable to liberals is wrong. Immediately cutting a trillion dollars (in one year) from the budget in this economic climate is irresponsible.

It does depend on where the money is coming from. The wars will be over, for the most part by 2013, so what part of the pentagon budget is he going to cut? My reading of his plan indicates that he plans to also eliminate cabinet departments including education and HUD, which would be a mistake.

Our military spending has continually grown since the middle of the last century. Wars end, sure. But we start new ones and jump into existing ones. Look at the places we've intervened between the end of W's last term and now. The world is a volatile place. That means there's always lots to cut. But even when we're not at war, we spend a lot to maintain our defenses.

HUD and DOE are small fish in the grand scheme of things. Those would be part of the trade off I described in the last paragraph.

Fiscally, you are right however we have major issues in this country now that center on education and housing. We should focus on increaing efficiency.

In regards to gay marriage, it ultimately should be a federal issue. We can't have some states recognize marriage licenses while others do not.

Efficiency, yes, it's a good concept. What better way to induce it than to create a competitive marketplace for education? Unless you think our union-dominated educated system benefits the poorest Americans.

Economists like Thomas Sowell have done a lot of work to show how miserable a job HUD has done at fulfilling its goals. By any standard, it's liberals who should be calling for the agency to be dismantled - that is, if they care about affordable housing and urban development.

Marriage should ultimately be a private matter. There should be no incentives attached to it or need to receive a state issued marriage license. That's easier to achieve when Rick Santorum and friends aren't allowed to call the shots.

Privatizing is just putting graduates of the same system in charge for huge profits. A better solution would be to bring over the Finnish School system. The department of education hasn't really improved our educational system, has it?
As for HUD, I'm not sure why it required a cabinet-level department in the first place, and most states already have their own HUD equivalent that redundantly manage the same things.

The majority of U.S. operations in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will be over with by 2013. I am not trying to project the future or say that we will not get involved with any other conflict. I am not even pro-war.

Looking at Ron Paul's budget with a from a realist perspective, what part of the defense budget is he going to cut? If he includes war spending for two wars that would already be finished by the time he gets into office then this is just politics as usual, semantics, and is dictated by the reality of the situation. If that is not the case and he wants to cut the "real" defense budget where is he going to make those cuts? I have a hard time seeing a Republican majority enacting broad defense cuts.

As to the elected official, having the truth come back haunt them, it is doubtful for if that was the case, anyone qualified would be elected instead of Obama. For he has backtracked far more on more important issues that effect us many years to come. The devil you know may just be worse than anything else imaginable.

It would - but it would also hurt the chances of a moderate-conservative candidate (which is the best possible option to oppose Obama) leaving Obama with the seat for another four years.

It might be like the 1992 Presidential race - where you had H.W. Bush, Clinton and Perot. If H. Ross wasn't in the race, H.W. would have been in office another four years. Yet, H. Ross took a lot of the independent and moderate-conservative vote away from H.W.

I could see that happening, this year, with Obama, Paul and Romney/Gingrich.

If liberals want the federal government to adopt their stances on foreign policy, gay marriage, the drug war, etc., they should convince the public, not vote for Ron Paul. If their views become more prominent among the general populace, Democrats will prioritize them on their agenda.

70% of the people oppose the war in Afghanistan and Americans are getting sick and tired of foreign wars. Majorities and large pluralities in states support drug criminalization. Many states have already legalized gay marriage. Sounds to me like this has little do with party, and more to do with the bipartisan nature of perpetuating policies that most Americans do not want.

Without a significant majority, it's hard to get legislation passed. 75% of Democrats oppose the Afghanistan war, but the Republican Party and Tea Party favor it. Even among those who do oppose it, many want to withdraw responsibly, which is exactly what we're doing (and did in Iraq). And when we went in, public opinion of both wars was much higher.

I'm pleased with the continued successes with gay marriage around the country. You'll notice that it's largely in Democratic states that these laws are passed. I'd like to see the evidence, but I haven't seen the evidence of mass public support for drug decrimilization. If there was, you can bet one of the political parties would be trying to capitalize on it.

Yes, but Congress doesn't really control wars. The executive has a ton of power, so getting around obstructions to pass legislation isn't the issue. Obama could have drastically changed our direction in Afghanistan and Iraq from day one, but he dragged his feet. I think as a matter of constitutional law, congress doesn't have much power on this anymore. Even if it were to reassert itself, that still wouldn't conflict with my point to Andrew which was just that the president is powerful enough to end wars by him/herself. Congress might also be able to end wars, but the president surely can and so congressional foot-dragging can't be an excuse for Obama to have waited to end the wars. Maybe public opinion, but not Congress.

Right, but he won't because he'll suffer political consequences for it, i.e., Republicans, public claiming he's weak on defense. He already has people claiming he's appeasing Iran. He won't risk the possibility of an outbreak in Afghanistan during his presidency because it'd be a political disaster.

But Michael's right. Congress has the power of the purse if they want to use it. But they won't for the same (political) reasons as Obama.
