Yankees Spring Training Bombshell: Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson, and Alex Rodriguez Could Be Suspended For PEDs

According to a source cited by Joe Ball of Dog and Pony Show, Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson, and Alex Rodriguez will be suspended 50 games each for violating Major League Baseball's policy against performance-enhancing drugs. Although he doesn't name the source, last season Ball tweeted a full month in advance that San Francisco Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera would be suspended for violating the league's PED policy.

Here's Ball's tweet, which also implicates 2011 NL MVP Ryan Braun:

After the 2011 season, PED-positive test results from Braun were leaked to ESPN, but he was cleared by an independent arbitration panel in a 2-1 vote after the handling of Braun's sample was called into question

The tweet comes just two days after Commissioner Bug Selig expressed a desire for harsher punishments for players who use banned substances. Currently, first time offenders receive a 50 game suspension; second time offenders a 100 game suspension; and third time offenders receive a liftetime ban.

The suspension of high-profile players would certainly tarnish the sport further in the near term, but the long-term implications could be positive, as it would show that not even the league's premier stars are immune from punishment.
