When asked by The Hollywood Reporter about the Golden Globes being an awards show known mostly for its drinking, this year's co-host (along with Amy Poehler) Tina Fey noted, "When you get a bunch of people in a room who don’t eat much, and you give them one drink, it gets good fast."

The Golden Globes are primarily known for their booziness, and this is largely because nobody really takes them seriously, outside of the potential for winners to receive a boost in their chances of winning an Oscar next month.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, an entertainment-industry cabal consisting of "real-estate agents, car salesmen, showbiz publicists, hairdressers and even a few journalists," votes for the winners in each category, with the results tabulated and for some reason kept secure by Ernst & Young. We know that it's a big secret who the winners will be every year, because Ernst & Young bigwigs tend to show up handcuffed to the results.

Fey and Poehler should host with with an awareness of the frivolousness of the Golden Globes, but without the awkward miasma that accompanied Ricky Gervais’s bizarre three-year stint as the event’s provocateur, which was hilarious to some, offensive to many, and apparently great for ratings. When asked how their presentation would differ from that of Gervais, Fey said “I don’t think anybody has to be afraid.”

The pair already provided one of the best moments of last year’s ceremony, so look for them to treat the star-studded Beverly Hills boozefest with all the seriousness that it deserves, which is to say, little, while maintaining the levity and mirth that make the Golden Globes worth watching.
