Aurora, Colorado police have identified 33-year-old Sonny Archuleta as the shooter in a recent shooting rampage which resulted in 4 deaths that Saturday - the second mass shooting in that town this year after deranged gunman James Holmes killed 12 and wounded 58 at a premiere showing of the new Batman movie in July.

Early Saturday morning, Archuleta apparently entered his townhome at 16005 Ithaca Place carrying at least one firearm. An exchange of some form happened at 3 AM, after which one resident of the home, Archuleta's wife, Stephanie, was able to escape the residence through a window and notify authorities of a shooting. At some point between Archuleta's arrival at the Ithaca Place home and the response of police forces, Archuleta killed 3 other members of the household.

Hostage negotiations apparently failed due to Archuleta's inability to act rationally. According to police sources, he acted "very irrationally... hung up the phone on negotiators, and ignored bullhorn commands to exit the premises... tear gas did not faze him." One neighbor, Jennifer Williams, suggested that Archuleta was a methamphetamines user and that "there was all kinds of commotion at that house."

Authorities reportedly evacuated a three-block radius surrounding the house as part of efforts to ensure public safety and coax Archuleta out.

“Sonny, come down stairs. Sonny, we have your wife. Sonny, come out and we’ll get you the help you need,” said the police negotiator, according to neighbor Shaunna Bustios.

“We know you’ve been up for four days. What’s done is done. Come out and we’ll get you some help," Williams overheard.

At some point near 8 AM, police lobbed tear gas into the first floor of the home. An Aurora SWAT team in an armored vehicle attempted to breach the residence and was fired upon. Though officers did not return fire that time, they did an hour later when Archuleta began shooting from a second-story window, resulting in his death. It was only at that time that authorities discovered the other bodies in the townhome.

Archuleta's MySpace and Twitter pages reveal he was deeply religious, according to the Daily Mail. Public records indicate Archuleta had three previous weapons charges, including "prohibited use of a weapon in 2004 and carrying a concealed weapon in Denver in June."

On September 3rd, Archuleta's brother Pat was murdered in a Denver restaurant. Sonny Archuleta is not suspected in that incident, although it is unknown what impact it had on his mental state prior to the shooting.

Four people were killed during a shooting at an Aurora, Colorado townhome, including a gunman who held police off for several hours, according to the Denver Post.

The shooter, likely a member of the household, entered the home and killed three residents, said police. A fourth resident was able to escape the house around 3 AM and notify authorities of the crisis. Police evacuated a three-block radius surrounding the home and attempted to coax the shooter out.

“We know you’ve been up for four days. What’s done is done. Come out and we’ll get you some help,” another neighbor, Jennifer Williams, overheard.

After the failure of negotiations, police shot tear gas into the first floor of the residence at 8:20 AM. About 9 AM, the suspect began shooting at police from the second floor of the house. A SWAT team returned fire, at which point the suspect dropped out of sight. Police have currently not confirmed whether the suspect was terminated by the authorities or committed suicide. After the shooting ceased, police entered the home and found the three adult victims on the first floor.

Unconfirmed statements indicate the shooter may have been a methamphetamine user. “There was all kinds of commotion at that house,” Williams said. Other statements by witnesses, including his apparent lack of sleep, may indicate that the shooting was drug-related.

Three people were killed in addition to a gunman after a gunfire-heavy hostage incident in Aurora, Colorado, the same town where a shooter killed 12 and wounded 58 at a premiere of Dark Knight Rises in July, reports Reuters.

After several hours of failed negotiation, police fired tear gas canisters into a suburban home before breaching the residence and shooting the gunman dead, according to media. Three people – believed to be the gunman’s family – were found slain by gunfire in the house.

Police became aware of the emergency sometime in the early morning and notified neighbors by 3 AM of the situation, evacuating several blocks. One resident of the home was able to escape via a window and notify emergency services, KUSA television said.

The suspect began shooting at police vehicles around 8 AM, leading to an exchange of gunfire. It was at that point that authorities first saw a lifeless corpse in the building.

Aurora most recently made news six months ago for the mass shooting on July 20th, 2012, in which an unstable man, James Holmes, killed a dozen people and injured countless more using a shotgun, semi-automatic rifle, handgun and a gas canister.

“We're just getting in there with our crime scene detectives, so obviously we'll have to determine if it was our rounds or his rounds,” said Police Sgt. Cassidee Carlson. “This is a big investigation, and a lot is entailed.”

Archuleta exposes himself as a gun criminal in the past and walks free so he can kill. But gun ban fanatics use this as fuel to ban LEGAL law abiding citizen gun owners. Such hypocrisy and downright dishonesty.

This guy had three previous weapons charges, the latest being in June for illegally carrying concealed gun. Strengthen the punishments against gun crimes like he committed and he would have been in prison. Libs just don't get it.

I believe this event is fair game for consideration by anyone who advocates for gun rights or for gun control. The fact of guns being involved is relevant here. To paraphrase NRA's LaPierre, there was a bad guy and good guys with guns.

Tom, check Raleigh's statements below. I am not naive to think that it this will not be used in the argument for more gun control, and you were quick to label it a mass shooting before you knew all of the facts, just as media did in NYC with the ESB.

At BEST, you can maybe allege this was an attempted mass murder and one person got lucky. Not exactly a persuasive argument, and again irrelevant to the nature of the article, which does not mention gun control anywhere.

Jack, the problem here is that not even the FBI agrees with you. "According to the FBI, mass murder is defined as four or more murders occurring during a particular event with no cooling-off period."

We're getting more action put pf Aurora than we ever got in a Terminator movie! In Georgia a mom puts 5 38 cal slugs into the face of an intruder... http://cdn.inquisitr.com/470538/mom-shoots-intruder-five-times-to-protect-children/ ...wow!

Sigh, so I am reactionary when someone labels an incident a mass shooting when its not. If you keep lowering the standard, like Feinstein lowers the standard of what an assault weapon is, then I guess there is nothing more to say is there? Whatever.

This is so sad. But from the looks of it, it's a bit different than what happened this summer. These kinds of domestic violence type shootings are so tragic. And the fact that it did take place in Aurora is that much worse. And then meth involved.

Hi Tom and Jack. I believe this current event is a very important link in the topic of guns and gun control. As we continue to see such incidents, we can interpret guns to be a public health hazard worthy of extra attention.
