Well, the irony is perfect: Mitt Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential candidate, will officially wind up with ... 47% of the vote.

The Associate Press released a tabulation of official presidential votes from all 50 states on Friday. Romney got 47.2% of the full presidential vote, identical to his infamous "47%" remark made in the early fall, a statement that haunted him for the rest of the 2012 campaign.

In a September 17 video posted by Mother Jones' David Corn, Romney apparently said the 47% of people who are for sure voting for President Obama are doing so because they want a government handout, as seen in a video of a private fundraising event that was secretly recorded. 

Romney says:

“There are 47% of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47% who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That, that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what … These are people who pay no income tax."

Romney's political rivals assailed him for the quote, claiming it reeked of elitism and showed that Romney did not care for half of American voters ... only Republicans and swing votes.

President Obama ripped Romney, constantly bringing it up throughout the campaign, as he did with this Facebook meme: 

If you just look at the top two candidates – Romney and Obama – and leave out third party candidates like Libertarian Gary Johnson, then Romney did a bit better, notching 48% of the vote.
