New Year's Day is an official U.S. holiday celebrated on January 1, 2013, and as such, many businesses will be closed. While major department stores, malls, and stores will be open, all public services, like street cleaning, garbage, and recycling pick up will be shut down.

If you plan on shopping on New Year's Day, it's best to call or check your local store's website in advance, as many stores will close entirely or have different hours.
