The verdict is in: Nicki Minaj supports Obama.
In case there was any lingering doubt, the hip-hop artist confirmed via Twitter on Monday that she will be supporting Barack Obama in November. She told her supporters, "Ha! Thank you for understanding my creative humor & sarcasm Mr. President, the smart ones always do... *sends love & support*
In case you're new to the controversy, Minaj released a new mixtape in which she rapped that she is a "Republican voting for Mitt Romney." The rap princess spits a line on Lil Wayne's track "Mercy": "I'm a Republican voting for Mitt Romney, you lazy bitches are fuckin' up the economy."
Media outlets initially took that line at face value, as evidence that she is voting for a Republican in 2012. But, entertainment experts quickly pointed out that she was likely being purposefully deceptive. As Brandon Soderberg of SPIN writes, "She's doing that thing rappers do where they make things up, and contrive the weirdest, wildest ways to say some pretty basic stuff like 'I got more money than you do, and I don't give a fuck' — Romney's M.O., no? — which I think is what Nicki is saying."
In a different Nicki Minaj song entitled, "Mind on My Money," she seemingly conveys a crush on President Obama saying, "tell Michelle I got my eye on Barack Obama."
In an interview with Power 95.3, a radio station in Orlando, Florida, President Obama said that Minaj "likes to play different characters" and that he did not believe she was actually supporting Romney. Minaj has an alter-ego Roman Zolanski, a demonic twin brother in the song "Roman's Revenge" on her album Pink Friday in 2010. The deejays interviewing Obama played her line on Lil Wayne's song and the president responded, "I'm not sure that's exactly what happened. She like to play different characters."
It turns out Obama was right all along. Minaj has finally put an end to a rumor that was never really credible in the first place.
