Rick Santorum delivered one of the headline speeches at the Republican National Convention on Tuesday, but his speech attracted attention for the wrong reasons.
The speech focused in on the theme of the American Dream, and Santorum sought to prove that President Obama is bad for the future of America.
"Under President Obama, the dream of freedom has become a nightmare of dependency. It’s not surprising fewer and fewer Americans are achieving their dreams." He continued, "Obama spent four years and borrowed 5 trillion dollars trying to convince you that he can make things better for you. ... The result, massive debt, anemic growth, and millions unemployed."
But, Santorum chose the metaphor of "hands" to frame his speech, something which did not go over well on Twitter.
Santorum spoke confidently, as though he were still running for president against Barack Obama. But, he made several references bound to upset the politically incorrect, as in when he referred to disabled people as having "little, broken hands." He tried to defend the "American family" and promote the pro-life movement by saying America needs to protect the "hands, born and unborn."
The hands metaphor, however, promoted a series of wise cracks over Twitter, mostly with a sexual theme. Santorum's main message was lost. Although he said, "We must stop the assault on marriage and the family today, restoring a home where married Moms and Dads are pillars of good families," Twitter focused in on other matters:
