It's the question that has been on pop culture fans' mind across the country all summer long: Who will play Christian Grey in the upcoming 50 Shades of Grey movie?
Nearly every day, it seems that a new actor has emerged as a possible star in the guaranteed Hollywood blockbuster 50 Shades of Grey. The movie adaptation of EL James' best-selling novel is one of the most anticipated movies since Harry Potter and The Dark Knight Rises, and a director or screenplay writer has not even been chosen yet.
With all the rumors floating around, it's difficult to follow the latest. So, here's a recap of the top contenders for the male lead in 50 Shades of Grey:
1) Ryan Gosling
For weeks, the presumed frontrunner was Hollywood hearthrob and The Notebook star Ryan Gosling. Gosling has the benefit of having wild online popularity (remember the Hey Girl, memes?), and very little personal life baggage. He's a proven star and would certainly please female fans of the movie.
2) Robert Pattinson
Robert Pattinson was mentioned in the conversation for Christian Grey for several weeks at the beginning of the summer, but ultimately may not be the choice due to his relationship drama. Girlfriend Kristen Stewart cheated on Pattinson this summer, which may mean the star could attract negative press to the film.
3) Matt Bomer
Bomer has been the most controversial of the potential Christian Grey picks. Writer Bret Easton Ellis raised eyebrows when he tweeted that Bomer should not play the male lead in 50 Shades of Grey because the actor is gay. "Okay I'll say it. Matt Bomer isn't right for Christian Grey because he is openly gay. He's great for other roles but this is too big a game." Rather than hurt Bomer's chances for the role, however, Ellis' comments may have actually had the opposite effect, making him a fan favorite to play Christian Grey. Bomer's fans have taken to Twitter to make the case for why the gay actor would still make for a good the straight part of Christian Grey.
4) Ian Somerhalder
In a new YouTube video which recently surfaced from a Vampire Diaries convention in New Jersey, Somerhalder discusses going out to Los Angles to meet with "those guys," presumably the 50 Shades filmmakers, to interview for the role. Immediately after his announcement, eager fans erupt in applause. That rumor has not been confirmed, but Somerhalder certainly appeals to teenage girl fans.
5) Shia LaBeouf
The newest rumor is that Transformers star Shia LaBeouf might be a contender. The 26-year-old is reportedly set to star in the upcoming film "Nymphomaniac," where he will shoot explicit sex scenes "to his fans' delight and his girlfriend Karolyn Pho's heartbreak." This could be good practice for the BDSM role of Christian Grey.
