As the speculation continues for which celebrities will star in the upcoming Hollywood sure-to-be-smash-hit 50 Shades of Grey movie, the frontrunner for the male lead of Christian Grey seems to be teenage heartthrob Ryan Gosling, not Robert Pattinson.
All summer long, 50 Shades of Grey fans and movie afficionados have been eagerly awaiting word about who will play the two leads of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, and there has been no shortage of names thrown around as possible stars. On the male side, Ryan Gosling and Robert Pattinson have regularly been in the conversation, along with Ian Somerhalder, and Matt Bomer. On the female side, we've heard rumors that Kristen Stewart, Emma Watson, Angelina Jolie, and Elizabeth Olsen are all in the conversation.
But, new reports suggest that the field for the role of Anastasia Steele may be getting smaller. Emma Watson has publicly denied that she is interested in the part, and now Elizabeth Olsen is also saying she's no interested in the "mommy porn." Olsen said, "No! No! No! when asked if there was any chance she'd star in the movie." However, she went on to talk about the importance of the book:
It's had a huge impact on society. Apparently rope sales have skyrocketed because women who've read the book are really getting into bondage, which is kind of great."
If Olsen and Watson aren't interested, who is? A new fan poll suggests that Twighlight star Kristen Stewart may be the most popular choice to play Anastasia Steele. Even though author E.L. James has said she doesn't want the actress to star in the movie, 30 percent of fans say they would like to see Stewart as the lead, which puts her significantly ahead of Watson and Olsen.
If Stewart gets cast as Anastasia Steele, then Robert Pattinson is almost certainly out of the running for Christian Grey, and Ryan Gosling becomes the favorite. Stewart and Pattinson have recently been embroiled in a public cheating scandal (Stewart cheated on Pattinson, and he's now living at the house of Reese Witherspoon), and there is not a chance that directors would cast the two stars in the same film. He may not even be interested to begin with. While some fans have said Pattinson could get back at Stewart by starring in the movie, he has not shown any interest. When asked about the book, he said he hadn't read it, but that if he had a copy, he "would just sit there and lick the pages."
Ryan Gosling, on the other hand would be a proven winner with a big audience draw and brings minimal personal life baggage to the table.
Ultimately, it may come down to who gets chosen first, the actress for Anastasia Steele or actor for Christian Grey. The other may be very much chosen based on who is chosen for the previous role.
