Down Goes SB 1070! (Well, Sort Of) – Earlier this morning, the Supreme Court rejected the major provisions of Arizona's controversial SB 1070 immigration bill. SCOTUS ruled in favor of the federal government on 3 out of the 4 major issues, rejecting the parts of the law that: 1) Make it a state crime for illegal immigrants not to possess their federal registration cards; 2) Make it a crime for illegal immigration to work, apply for work or solicit work; 3) Allow state and local police to arrest illegal immigrants without a warrant when probably cause exists that they committed “any public offense that makes the person removable from the United States.” The only issue that the Court did not decide was the provision which requires officers to check the immigration status of individuals subsequent to a lawful arrest. This was left to the state courts to interpret further. Felicia Reid explains more.

SCOTUS Insider – The Court also issued a ruling in the case of American Traditions Partnership, Inc. v. Bullock which extends the controversial Citizens United decision to the states. At issue in the Montana case was whether Citizens United applied only to federal election law, or if it extended to states. Montana’s lawyers asserted that Montana is not bound by Citizens United because the Montana law at issue “imposes far different obligations, and therefore affects corporate speech in a far different manner, than the federal law at issue in Citizens United.” The Court rejected that interpretation outright. Right before Election Day, the company is likely to notify the 'vast majority' of its 123,000 workers that they're at risk of being laid off, said Greg Walters, the company's vice president of legislative affairs. Walters' comments are some of the most specific threats yet from an industry that's trying to head off the $500 billion in automatic cuts in defense spending set to begin taking effect Jan. 2. Unless Congress reaches a deal to stave off the cuts, 'we will find it necessary to issue these [layoff] notices probably to the vast majority of our employee base,' Walters told POLITICO. … [T]he timing of the cuts ... provides an opportunity for the defense industry to ratchet up the pressure on President Obama and congressional leaders to tackle the issue before November.”
